On Monday the 7th and Tuesday the 8th February, both Year 1 classes visited the Scrapstore Centre in Hull. As part of our ‘We Can Make A Difference’ topic, the children were enthused by the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ ethos adopted by the Scrapstore and were able to freely engage with the materials available.
The pupils were encouraged to use both their senses and imaginations when handling the reused materials and ‘think outside the box’ as to how they could be reused to make art. The Scrapstore staff were impressed by their willingness to touch the materials, discover more about the objects and ask interesting questions. They explored the whole centre, but the bubble wrap, scarecrow and balloon faces were particular favourites of the children.
During the workshop part of the morning, the staff demonstrated how to join materials using different types of tape and how to cover bottles and cups using different coloured sticky back plastics. Then the pupils discovered their creativity and were given the freedom to design and make their own creatures using the materials available. Our fabulous squid and bumble bee models definitely reflect how much the children enjoyed the day and how art can really be made from anything.

We’re glad you enjoyed the Scrapstore and we’re pleased you enjoyed your trip.
Well done for recycling all the scraps and creating such wonderful creatures.
Year 3 are all very impressed with the creations we have seen so far.
We think the photos are fantastic too!
