Key Stage One

Exploring toys of yesteryearReading in the library Key Stage One comprises of two year groups with approximately seventy children between the ages of five and seven. At Victoria Dock we have three mixed age classes of about around twenty three/four children, all of mixed ability. Each class has an even mix of Year 1 and Year 2 children with an advantageous ratio of one teacher and one Teaching Assistant with the small number of children.

The three classes work very closely together in all areas and will, for the benefit of the children’s personal and social development, work at times as two single age classes with two teachers and a Teaching Assistant in each. During the morning, the children work in single age classes for English and Mathematics with an additional member of staff taking on a group making for even greater staff:pupil ratios

All children in Key Stage One have access to well-structured learning through play opportunities in our shared area and secure outside area. Also for the children in Year 1, it is important to build on prior knowledge from the Foundation Stage as these children are still very young. Progress is carefully monitored.

The children in Year 2 are encouraged to be even more independent and to take greater control of their own thinking and learning. During the year the children still study the usual subjects through a topic approach, but towards the end of the year there is an emphasis on the transition from not only Year 2 to Year 3, but from Key Stage One to Key Stage Two.
