On Thursday 20th January the school football team took part in the first round of the NPower Championship School’s Football Tournament. The squad of eight children, all from Year 6, played three games in their group with the winning team progressing into the Area Finals. The school team emerged as group winners to progress to the Area Finals and hopefully on a longer journey to Wembley.
The first match was a closely contested affair in that neither keeper was really tested. If it went on possession and quality of football, Victoria Dock would have won easily but the usually clinical finishing of the front players was missing and the game ended as a draw. In the second game Victoria Dock continued with their usual attacking football, great passing and soon go their rewards when Ahmed Salam coolly slotted the ball into the back of the net from distance. The school’s keeper kept Victoria Dock in it with a couple of great saves and Ahmed Salam made sure the points were Victoria Dock’s with a second goal. In the third and final match, Victoria Dock knew a win would see them into the next round but struggled to break down the opposition. Chance after chance went begging and it could very easily have been lost when Victoria Dock went a goal down. Despite the setback, a quick response was needed and was delivered – one all and the game was there to be had. Another goal for each team followed and the match finished 2 – 2 which left the team wondering about other results.
Much to the relief of the team, results went in favour of Victoria Dock and with one win and two draws, Victoria Dock won the group and progress to the next round which will be played on Thursday 27th January.
