A superb last minute strike by Oliver McKee gave the Year 4 football team victory last night in a thrilling friendly match against Hymers College! The Year 4 team (featuring Jacob Moore from Year 3) took to the field hoping to exact revenge over Hymers following a recent 1-0 defeat to them in a cup final at the Bonus Arena.
There was little to choose between the two sides during the first 20-minute half with both teams looking well organised at the back. Some patient build up play and good passing created a couple of good chances for Oliver McKee and Jacob Moore, but the Hymers keeper pulled off two good saves to deny Victoria Dock from taking the lead. Joe Reeves also threatened to open the scoring but agonisingly saw his long shot drift by the right hand post by inches.
Hymers also created some openings but did not manage to trouble LLoyd Leigh-Smith in goal who was relieved to see the Hymers chances sail wide of his goal. The teams both went in at half time 0-0.
The second half started off in a similar fashion as the first with some exciting football being played. The Victoria Dock defence continued to look good with Joshua Mills, Joe Reeves and Max Tong thwarting any oncoming Hymers attack. This laid the platform for Tom Brown, Harrison Dean and Jacob Moore to continue to make chances at the other end.
It all looked set for a draw until 20 seconds from time when Oliver McKee took control of the ball in the centre of midfield. After a good first touch he unleashed a great strike 20 yards out on his weaker left foot to send the ball flying into the top right corner of the net, going in clipping the underside of the crossbar!
With a strong Victoria Dock team, Hymers simply had no time and no way past the defence as time ran out after the restart to the delight of Victoria Dock!
Hymers 0 – 1 Victoria Dock (O. McKee)
