On Wednesday 30th May, the Year 3 and 4 cricket team performed heroically to win the Drax Cup regional finals for the first time in the school’s history. This incredible success sees them now go through to the East Yorkshire finals where they will compete against the best teams in the East Riding. For a team who have only been practising for a short time this is a notable achievement and all the coaches involved commented on the excellent spirit and tenacity of the side.
In order to win the event the children first competed in a group stage. This saw them defeat St. Richards, Thoresby and Spring Cottage in a number of tight and exciting encounters. Oliver McKee captained the team fantastically, motivating the team and leading by example throughout. In addition, everyone contributed greatly to the success of the team with some incredible catching and batting making the team formidable opponents.
After a light lunch, the children faced Pearson Primary in the semi-finals who they dispatched thanks to some strong hitting from Tyler Turner and a great catch from Charlie Turner. The reward for this victory was a re-match with Spring Cottage in the final. This was a tremendously tense encounter, which resulted in the team winning on the final ball by one run, 251 to 250!
The whole team deserves so much credit for their achievements and the manner in which they played each game. Sportsmanship and teamwork are such key qualities in any individual and the children showed they had these in spades.
So onward and upwards…next stop the Welton and Brough Cricket Club on the 14th June
Well done.
